Celtics Pre-Playoff Post #2: Avoid Bad Thoughts

April 14, 2010

Okay, so this picture says it all:

Rondo looking like a fool as Rose does whatever he wants, whenever he wants.

Rondo looking dumbfounded as Rose does whatever he wants, whenever he wants.

I’m not going to say that Pierce’s brilliant performance (28 points on 12-17 shooting) was wasted on last night’s loss to Chicago. Instead, I am going to say that Pierce is finely tuning his game before the playoffs. Now what his peers choose to do might be an entirely different matter… But it was good to see Pierce put the team on his back and show us vintage flashbacks of what his 32 year old body can still handle.

Call me an unhealthy optimist. Whatever.
I still like this team. If they get dropped in the first or second round of the playoffs, then so be it. It just means that this team wasn’t built as well as it could have, or not coached as well as it could have been, or the players did not play as well as they should have. Whatever variable you choose to invest your angry stock in is up to you. Contracts are expiring, and Danny looks to have a trigger happy feeling heading into this upcoming exciting off-season.

Some clues from last night that keep me optimistic about the playoffs and can help us all avoid all of those bad thoughts creeping into our psyches:

  • Pierce was on fire last night in the second half. Enough said.
  • KG’s lift: KG looked great off the dribble last night, but even better when jumping. KG had that beautiful (but yes, questionable) short turnaround jumper that he converted into a 3 point play. The lateral movement isn’t great, but much improved since the All Star Break
  • Sheed was able to connect on a put-back following a rebound. Okay, so it was on the wrong hoop. Still.
  • Sheed felt like a schmuck after the play mentioned above: at least he still cares. Even just a little.

Okay. So that was a short list. Whatever. This team is destined to do whatever it is destined to do. I just have to keep thinking that all of this torture is worth it for two reasons:

  1. We won the title in 2008. Winning a championship in any sport is nearly impossible with the amount of money, luck, and luck that is involved these days.
  2. Think about where we were before 2008. In 2007, any of us would have killed for a #4 seed and a chance to make the ECF and Finals, even if it wasn’t entirely realistic.

I think tonight’s game should be fun because of how chippy the last encounter was with the Bucks. Fear the Dear? No way.

C’s Kicksies

Right back at ya with another installment! Here are some sneaks from the games against the Bucks and Bulls. Buck and Bull sounds like a ride or, well, nevermind.

Pierce rockin his signature Nike Air Legacy. What a pretty colorway. Yes, I used the word pretty. Shut up.
